What and why is the fencing special?
As it was a maximum prison security fence, it is made from stainless steel, in a rectangular pattern. Through the natural elements and sea air that have eroded the fencing over time, due to the location of Robben Island, the fencing still displays ruminants of the white PVC coating and the rusted exposed areas. This natural corrosion of wear and tear leads to each piece of fencing used by Legacy Collection being unique, with no one piece the same as the other.

How did Legacy Collection come by acquiring the fencing?
Robben Island was going through a renovation in 2009. And they had to replace the fencing, as it was beyond repair and badly rusted. The fencing was rescued once it reached the mainland. And thereafter the birth of Legacy Collection and its unique creations.
Is the fencing limited?
Yes, over a period of time the maximum security fence was replaced with new. The fencing Legacy Collection uses forms part of the original maximum security prison section which held Nelson Mandela, Ahmed Kathrada, Oliver Thambo and other comrades.
Does the fence increase in value?
The true value of the fencing is in its intrinsic historical worth. Having been removed from the world heritage site, Robben Island. With a limited supply the value of the fence will increase as the supply and demand expands and contracts.
How do I care for the fencing? And is it cared for differently to regular jewellery?
The fencing itself is protected with a UV resistant chemically hardening solution called TarBender. The TarBender stops further corrosion of the fencing and protects the fencing from further wear and tear. Due to TarBender being a compound it can be affected by other chemical compounds, thus it is advised to avoid any contact with harsh chemicals. Tapid water and regular soap are perfect for basic cleaning of the fence.
What is TarBender?
Tarbender is a clear liquid epoxy that is brushed over the fencing surface to provide a strong high resistant gloss coating. It is applied to preserve and protect the unique nature of the fencing.
Can the ring size be changed?
Legacy Collections full range of rings can be sized, due to the pure metal they are manufactured in. However, there are limits to resizing and advise only sizing either two sizes down or two sizes up, to not compromise the structure and setting of ring.
Legacy Collections standard ring sizes are manufactured in South African sizing: ‘M’ and ‘P’
What is the difference between Silver verses Silver Plated?
Silver is a pure metal, often referred to as Sterling Silver. Usually stamped with a hallmark of 925 to indicate it’s purety.
Silver Plated is just that – a thin layer of a part Silver compound that is coated over another metal such as copper, brass or nickel. This process is referred to as ‘Plating’, with color variants such as Yellow Gold Plated, Rose Gold Plated or Black Rhodium Plated.
