Description
Water + Rust by Charmaine Taylor
Inspired by Cape Town’s Atlantic Ocean, known as The Cape of Storms, Water + Rust reflects how fierce ocean storms cause coastal metals to rust and age. The Atlantic Ocean is also the very force that rusted and deteriorated the Robben Island fencing, creating its unique, beautiful scars.
The metal forming the African continent in this artwork is authentic historical fencing from Robben Island prison — the island surrounded by this wild, icy ocean, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned.
This rusted fencing symbolises resilience and hope, honouring Mandela’s legacy and the sacrifices of all Robben Island political prisoners. Each piece includes a unique serial-numbered tag and a certificate of authenticity.
A portion of profits supports sustainable employment projects in South Africa, blending art with meaningful impact.
