The square shape reflects the four walls of confinement — both physical and mental — endured by Mandela and others on Robben Island. Through struggle, strength and freedom are reclaimed. The three distinct fence colours honour South Africa’s rich diversity of languages, tribes, and our Rainbow Nation (that South Africa is fondly named).
