Robben Island Private Tours

A Deeper, More Personal Way to Experience History

Robben Island is one of the world’s most significant historical sites — a place of resilience, reflection, and powerful human stories. During apartheid, it held political prisoners who fought for freedom in South Africa, including Nelson Mandela, Ahmed Kathrada, Walter Sisulu, Govan Mbeki, and other anti-apartheid leaders. Despite harsh conditions, they endured with courage, dignity, and hope, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire generations.

Through Atlas + Taylor, a boutique travel company run by Charmaine Taylor-Claasen and her husband, Dr Stefan Claasen, we offer private, carefully curated Robben Island tours for guests seeking more than a standard visit. These experiences are shaped by first-hand knowledge, trusted relationships, and deep respect for the island’s legacy, allowing guests to engage with its history in a meaningful, personal, and unforgettable way.

Robben Island Tour Hosted by Christo Brand

Former Robben Island Warder & Close Confidant of Nelson Mandela

This exceptional tour is hosted by Christo Brand, who brings Robben Island’s history to life through powerful first-hand storytelling. Guests gain rare insight into Nelson Mandela’s 18 years on Robben Island, and how the island shaped one of the world’s most respected leaders.

The tour follows the official Robben Island route on a shared bus, but Christo’s close relationship with the guides and drivers ensures a comfortable, well-paced experience with dedicated moments for his personal stories. Key sites include the Limestone Quarry and Leper Graveyard.

We can also include a private helicopter transfer to Robben Island with Christo Brand. Which will save time and be a lot more private.
